Season’s Greetings from the Canadian Teachers’ Federation

As we head into the holiday season, I’d like to take this opportunity to wish you all a very restful and joyous season with your family and friends. I know that you have all, most likely, had a very busy fall, and with only two weeks left before we break for Christmas, there is still, no doubt, much to be done!

The fall has been very busy and exciting at the Canadian Teachers’ Federation. As CTF is very well respected on the national and international front, we are constantly sought out by organizations with which to partner or network. Partnerships and joint initiatives have opened doors for CTF like never before.

In fact, CTF was honoured to be the only organization to be granted a private audience with the Dalai Lama in Montreal. After his presentation to over 15,000 people at the Bell Centre in early October, our group was brought backstage to meet His Holiness. I had the privilege of introducing him to Nova Scotia teacher, Heather MacIsaac, designer of the 2009 World Teachers Day (WTD) poster, as well as to the three winners of our student essay contest on peace, Daniel Jewson,  Emily Liston both from Ontario, and Migguel Huard of Alberta. There, he was presented with a framed copy of the WTD poster, as well as a bound copy of the essays.  The Dalai Lama’s message of compassion and peace coincided with our World Teachers’ Day theme of Peace. Live it. Teach it. It was especially fitting that the presentation took place just before the UNESCO acclaimed date of October 5, World Teachers’ Day.

Staff Officers Meeting : Framing the Message

The annual Member organization's Staff Officers Meeting occurred in Ottawa, Nov. 18 to 20, and focused on how to frame messages.  Once again, these meetings were a hub for staff networking and an opportunity to learn from each other.  The meeting was launched with a presentation by award-winning journalist and historian Gwynne Dyer, who demonstrated the importance of framing the message on key issues that have far-reaching political impact and significant public policy implications.  The next morning, federal Member of Parliament Justin Trudeau spoke about the importance of teachers to teaching students to become life-long learners, critical thinkers and active engaged citizens.
