Haiti's humanitarian crisis has sparked a large outpouring of international aid in response to the natural disaster.  Rescue teams from around the world are on site or making their way to the earthquake-ravaged capital of Port-au-Prince. The Canadian Teachers’ Federation through Education International is adding its resources and support to this worldwide response to help the Haitian people, including teachers, students and their families.

Rebuilding schools and lives in Haiti

As the world rallies to bring food, water, medical care, funds and supplies immediately to Haiti, the Canadian Teachers’ Federation is very mindful that our role as a teacher organization will come later into play through Education International, when work gets underway to rebuild from the ruins and devastation caused by the Jan. 12 earthquake.

Like everywhere around the world, schools and public education are central to communities. Students seek solace in classrooms in the wake of disasters. Classrooms are often forums for discussion, allowing students to express themselves, overcome their anxieties and share their grief and loss among themselves.

One of the first steps towards normalcy for families and communities will be when schools are being rebuilt. Haitian teachers know they can count on their teacher colleagues from around the world, including CTF – for support and assistance.

Through Education International, CTF is kept apprised of latest developments about our teacher colleagues, members of the Confédération nationale des éducateurs d’Haïti (CNEH), CTF’s partner organization in Haiti.

What teachers and students can do
February 12, 2010 deadline for donations to be matched by the Canadian government.

In addition to EI’s appeal for funds to which CTF has invited CTF Member organizations to contribute, CTF also invites individual donations from teachers and Member organizations staff which can be funneled through its International Aid Fund.

These funds will supplement the EI appeal so that we can also support any possible initiatives by CNEH to meet the needs of members in these difficult circumstances.

Funds received before February 12, 2010, will be eligible for matching by the Canadian government.

If you wish to make a donation, please send to the CTF Trust Fundand mark it for the International Aid for Haiti. Mail to:
