Edmonton… The Canadian Teachers’ Federation (CTF) is extremely pleased to present the 2010 Outstanding Aboriginal Educator Award to Beverley Cheechoo, a member of the Moose Cree First Nation who has taught for nearly 30 years in a public K-8 school in Cumberland House, Saskatchewan.
“Bev Cheechoo is an authentic voice for Aboriginal peoples who has won great respect for her ability to forge enduring ties between schools, teachers and the communities they serve,” explains CTF President Mary-Lou Donnelly highlighting Bev’s involvement in the Saskatchewan Teachers’ Federation (STF) and leadership in the education community. “Working at the grassroots of northern education, Bev has developed Cree language materials and provided communications seminars and workshops for first-year teachers. She has also brought a strong Aboriginal and northern perspective to the teaching profession through active leadership in the STF.
“Aboriginal teachers have an important role in encouraging and sustaining Aboriginal culture in Canada,” says CTF President Mary-Lou Donnelly. “For this reason, the CTF Board of Directors through its Advisory Committee on Aboriginal Education chose to pay tribute to all Aboriginal teachers by highlighting one’s incredible achievements.
“Canadian schools, teacher organizations and teacher education programs are open to learn from the diverse knowledge of Aboriginal teachers. Education plays a key role in the preservation and restoration of Aboriginal culture, and in improving the lives of Aboriginal peoples and addressing long-standing inequities,” concludes the President.
