Dear Teachers and Students;

On behalf of its Member organizations and staff, the Canadian Teachers’ Federation extends its deepest sympathy to all those affected by the tragic events that unfolded today at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Sandy Hook, Connecticut. Our thoughts go out to the victims, their families and friends, the entire staff and student body as well as the community.

Those of us in the teaching community across Canada abhor this deeply disturbing, random act of violence. This tragedy has further strengthened our resolve to work with all education partners in the global community to ensure that all schools are safe and caring environments, regardless of their geographic locations.

On behalf of nearly 200,000 teachers across Canada, please convey our most sincere support and condolences to the teachers, students and families as they mourn their losses. We hope they achieve their goal of recovery and healing in a collective environment of nurturing support and assistance.

In solidarity,
