Public Education, Who Gets to Tell Its Story?

| Public education

From the Canadian Teachers’ Federation, the Public Education Journal – insight and analysis on the forces shaping public education.

Public education is a story we are writing together. It is evolving in the chrysalis of classrooms across Canada, where educators and students forge the foundations of our society while schools quietly anchor our democracy.

The Public Education Journal exists to make this story visible.

How is workload intensifying for teachers and education workers? How has their sense of professional value evolved? From the role of artificial intelligence in education to the rapidly changing expectations placed on schools, we will also weave insights from public polling to better understand student needs and parents’ roles. When a data point tells us that teachers are reconsidering their long-term commitment to the profession, we’ll ask why. When students report on the effects of overcrowded classrooms on their learning experience, we’ll explore evidence-based solutions.

Alongside insights drawn from Parachute – the Canadian Teachers’ Federation’s national survey series – the Journal will publish opinions from leaders in the profession and first-person accounts from educators on the ground. We will also report on the legislative advocacy, research, and labour relations efforts advancing public education across Canada.

We will examine how public schools function not just as institutions, but as civic spaces where human-centric values are nurtured, and knowledge is shared.

At its core, the Public Education Journal is about connection: between evidence and experience; between classrooms from Yellowknife to St. John’s; and between educators, students, families, and the society we are shaping together. Public education is a shared project. This Journal is where we think about it, question it, defend it, and imagine what it can become next.
